Index.

Nicusor Iftimia is leader of the Advanced Microscopy and Image Guided Interventions Group at Physical Sciences, Inc. in Andover, Massachusetts. He has been awarded several NIH and DoD grants to conduct cutting–edge research in biomedical optics imaging for cancer diagnosis and therapy guidance. He has published over forty peer–reviewed journal papers, is the author of several book chapters, and a co–inventor of more than ten patents.

William R. Brugge is Director of the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Brugge pioneered the use of endoscopic ultrasound imaging¿in the diagnosis and staging of gastrointestinal malignancies, particularly early malignancies of the pancreas.

Daniel X. Hammer is leader of the Biomedical Imaging Group at Physical Sciences, Inc. in Andover, Massachusetts. He specializes in the development of innovative biomedical optical instruments, conducting international award–winning research in the area of ophthalmology and adaptive optics. He has published more than forty peer–reviewed journal papers and is a co–inventor of more than ten patents.

The most comprehensive review of applications of optical imaging in clinical medicine

This authoritative resource covers the latest advances in optical technologies for clinical medicine, providing students, teachers, researchers, and clinicians with the necessary information to solve technical and clinical challenges in optical imaging. Based upon the research and opinions of practitioners who are leaders in their respective fields, the text offers numerous examples of clinical applications, including traditional imaging modalities in clinical medicine, diagnostic imaging needs in clinical medicine, advance optical imaging approaches in dermatology and ophthalmology, high–resolution optical imaging in interventional cardiology and gastroenterology, optical mammography, and much more.

In sharing the most recent developments in optical imaging, the contributors clarify the clinical potential of these advanced technologies. Clustered by clinical application and technical content, the chapters highlight optical imaging technologies that are in early development stage, already in use, or undergoing clinical trials, such as:

  • Fourier domain optical coherence tomography, parallel and line field optical coherence tomography, confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, scanning laser polarimetry, and adaptive optics for ophthalmic imaging

  • Optical coherence tomography and endoscopic microscopy for gastroimaging

  • Optical coherence tomography for cardiovascular imaging

  • Confocal microscopy of skin cancer

  • Fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy in cardio– and neuroimaging

  • Functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) for brain imaging

  • Continuous wave, frequency–domain, and time–domain systems diffuse optical tomography for breast imaging

  • Optoacoustic tomography for breast imaging

  • Laser doppler and speckle contrast imaging, optical coherence tomography, multiphoton microscopy, optoacoustic imaging, diffuse spectroscopy, and optical tomography for tissue angiogenesis

  • Time–domain and spectral–domain phase sensitive interferometry for functional biomedical imaging

  • Polarization microscopy for clinical medicine and developmental biology

  • Nanotechnology approaches for contrast enhancement in optical imaging and disease targeted therapy

  • Molecular probes for optical contrast enhancement of gastrointestinal cancers

Advances in Optical Imaging for Clinical Medicine is the reference of choice for academic and industrial researchers who want to keep track of the latest developments; clinical researchers who want to apply optical imaging to clinical problems; and educators teaching undergraduate and graduate biophotonics and biomedical optics related courses to their students.
