Dancing the Strong Woman in Malaysia - is the first attempt to illuminate the parallel between the strong woman, feminism and contemporary dance within the Malaysian context. As the image of the strong woman and the presence of feminism in contemporary dance is interestingly examined, this book documents some of the eclectic works/dances of three most prominent Malaysian women choreographers, Marion DCruz, Aida Redza and Mew Chang Tsing by exploring the roles that they created for and of women in their dances. The book proclaims that the women choreographers, their dances and the roles of the strong and their stories theorize a female model of development which posits an authentic voice for women. Ultimately, this reflects womens strengths, womens determination, womens authority and womens empowerment.

Mumtaz Begum is a lecturer with the Drama & Theatre department of Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang. She attained her doctorate in Dance from University of Malaya. Trained in Bharata Natyam, Silat, Minang dances and contemporary dance techniques, she incorporates dance, creative movements, drama and story telling in her artistic projects.
