This dissertation is a comparative analysis between the play "Luces de Bohemia" by the Spanish playwright Ramon del Valle-Inclan, and its translation into English "Bohemian Lights" by Maria M. Delgado. Ramon del Valle-Inclan is one of the most celebrated authors of Spanish literature; his conception of the world and the human being were shadowed by his observation of Spanish society and the crisis the country was going through at the beginning of the 19th century. Valle-Inclan's response was to write ridiculing parodies of this society to show its degradation hoping to generate a reaction. This approach resulted in the creation of a new theatrical genre named Esperpento, one of the most culture-bound literary traditions, which shows the real Spanish character and way of life and is fully displayed in "Luces de Bohemia." This analysis guides the reader through the different categories of translation challenges, both cultural and linguistic, found in this masterpiece of the Spanish literature.
