Trichomonas vaginalis, an anaerobic flagellated protozoan, is the causative agent of trichomoniasis, which is one of the most common nonviral sexually transmitted disease (STD). Women usually suffers from symptomatic infection, while men are usually asymptomatic. The T. vaginalis genome was found to be approximately 160 megabases in size, little is known about the genetic diversity and population structure of this haploid parasite may be due to the lack of appropriate tools. This study aimed to investigate the demographic characterization of T.vaginalis; the genetic variations among different isolates of this protozoan and the influence of these variations on disease phenotype, infertility and cervical abnormality.
