This book contributes to our understanding oforganizational communication in collaborativeinterorganizational relationships (IORs) in thenonprofit sector. Collaborative IORs demonstrate aform of leadership that is distributed among thepartners to mediate between common and competinginterests. This enables collaborative IORs to fostercollective action, despite the absenceof formal authority structures. This book alsodemonstrates the reciprocal processes of stakeholderparticipation needed to sustain collective action incollaborative IORs. Furthermore, the participation ofmultiple stakeholders in collaborative IORs givesrise to several communicative tensions that arebalanced through interactions among collaborationmembers as they continually negotiate the socialinfrastructure that constitutes collaborative IORs.Overall, this research helps us better understand thepractices of communication and human interaction thatfoster collaborative relationships among multiplestakeholders, especially within organizationalpartnerships in the nonprofit sector.
