Even though the synchronic and diachronic aspects oflinguistics have been rather strictly separated intheory, actual practice has shown a mutual interestbetween these areas of the study of language. CVCVTheory is no exception. The author uses this theoryto analyse the restructuring of regular inflectionalmorphology between Old and Middle English. The bookcomprises three basic parts. Firstly, elementarynotions of historical linguistics are considered, andthe dependence of diachronic study on generallinguistic theories is pointed out. Secondly, theauthor discusses the interaction of phonology andmorphology; the relevant claims of CVCV Theory areintroduced as well. Thirdly, an analysis of therestructuring of early English morphology ispresented, using CVCV Theory. It will be shown thatthis particular theory may help us to analyse earlyEnglish from some new perspectives which often fallout automatically as a consequence of the use of thisparticular theory. The book will be of interest tohistorians of Old and Middle English as well as totheoretical phonologists and morphologists who areinterested in historical analyses.
