A content analysis was conducted on the shows 106 &Park and Sucker Free on MTV for the time period ofJuly 1st to August 31st 2006. Of the 92 videosshown, 43 were selected via random sample to createtwo ''composite weeks'' for the viewing period of theseshows. Coders were graduate and doctoral students inFlorida State University College of Communication andonly four had familiarity with the genre of musicvideo coded. The frequencies of dominance/subservience,implicit aggression, explicit aggression, aggressionwith sexuality, objectification (without showingface), objectification (showing face), implicit andexplicit sexuality, wearing revealing clothing,sexual pursuit and being sexually pursued were tallied.The findings show that females are objectifiedsignificantly more often than males with and withoutthe camera showing the face of the individual. Femaledisplays of implicit sexuality occur significantlymore often than male displays in music videos andmale artists are significantly more likely to be therecipient of these displays of sexuality.
