This work is an indebt study of the implementation, in Igboland, of the decree of the Council of Trent on establishment of seminaries. The word "shade" indicates that the Council of Trent is central to this study only in so far as it was the first Council to see the need for seminaries for the formation of Catholic priests, articulate its objectives, outline the principles, and decree their implementation. The work follows up the historical development of Council's project and its adjustments to changing conditions through the years, especially as they have been brought together in the Second Vatican Council's Optatam Totius and John Paul II's Pastores Dabo Vobis. The survey of the implementation of the project in Igboland reveals a sincere will, nonetheless some errors in interpretation of the decree, and therefore pitfalls in the implementation. This researcher uncovers how inadequate formation affects the morale of priests in pastoral ministry. In this work, he makes recommendations that will help in remedying the situation.

Rev. Jerome N. Okafor was ordained a priest for the Catholic Diocese of Awka in Nigeria in 1983. He has Bachelor's Degrees in Philosophy and Theology, Post Graduate Diploma in Education, Master's and Doctorate in Theology. He served as Chaplain to Catholic Youths and Catholic Women, a Seminary Professor, and Pastor. He now pastors in Fargo Diocese.
