This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Fundamental Approaches to Software Engineering, FASE 2001, held in Genova, Italy in April 2001. The 22 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 74 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on metamodelling, distributed components, UML, testing, formal methods, and case studies.

This volume aims to build a bridge between the pragmatic methods for the design of information systems and the formal, mathematical background. Firstly, the principal of feasiblity of an integration of the different methods is demonstrated.
