This book investigates fundamental aspects ofautomated bargaining using software agents, as wellas business-related applications. Software agents areprograms which are capable of autonomously andintelligently realise a given task. By means of suchagents, the bargaining process can be automated,allowing products and services to be flexible andtuned to the individual preferences of the peopleconcerned. The fundamental part investigatesbargaining within a stylised world, and studies thefactors that influence bargaining outcomes in such asetting. This can provide insights for the productionof software agents, strategies, and setting upbargaining rules for practical situations. This isachieved using computational simulations, as well asgame theory. A framework is then introduced wherenegotiation is used for recommending shops tocustomers, for example on a web page of an electronicshopping mall. Furthermore, a system is presented forselling and personalising so-called informationgoods, such as news articles, software, and music.The system is capable of taking into accountimportant business-related conditions such as thefairness of the negotiation.
