He asks Maryln to give her opinion on Lady's ability to be a cadaver dog. Lady Bird and Dave travel to Indiana where Maryln is testing search and rescue dogs. As they are concluding their research of Lady's background, the 2016 flood occurs in White Sulphur Springs, WV. Dave and Lady Bird are the only local K9 team trained to do recoveries. Dave asks Maryln to bring her cadaver dogs to WV to assist him in the recovery of flood victims. Maryln, along with two teammates travel to White Sulphur Springs. They form a team that consists of dogs that were once unwanted and left to survive on their own. The team is joined by Korey, a K9 police officer, who runs backup for them. They name the team The Misfits, as they do not have perfectly polished uniforms or expensive equipment. What they do have are exceptionally well-trained dogs. The book takes you for an inside look at the training and the operation of cadaver-dog teams. It gives a unique perspective of the emotional roller coaster that the team faces each day in their nine-day recovery efforts on Howard Creek and on the destroyed Greenbrier Resort Golf Course. They are devastated when they are unable to make the final recovery. Forty-seven days after the date of the flood, Dave and Lady set out to find the final victim of the flood, fourteen-year-old Mykala Phillips.
