Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the major cause ofmorbidity and mortality in developed countries. Menhave a higher incidence and an earlier onset of CVDthan age-matched women. It has been shown that youngwomen have lower CVD incidence than young men and theincreasein CVD rates in older (post-menopausal) womenwhenestrogen levels decline suggests that estrogensare cardioprotective. This theory has beenextensively investigated demonstrating a favourablereduction in LDL, reducing expression of celladhesion molecules and promoting vasodilatation byinducing nitric oxide (NO) production in endothelialcells. However, not many studies have explored thealternate theory that male sex hormones, androgens (T& DHT), may promote CVD. Investigators examining maleandrogens in vivo have shown inconsistent results, with both adverse and protective effects onatherosclerosis formation. Overall, this studydemonstrated that male sex hormones have an effect onatherosclerosis formation. Androgens have importantgender- and dose- specific effects on plaqueformation, and can hormonally regulate AR cofactorsat the mRNA and protein level.
