Better known as the "predator-prey relationship," the consumer-resource relationship means the situation where a single species of organisms consumes for survival and reproduction. For example, Escherichia coli consumes glucose, cows consume grass, cheetahs consume baboons; these three very different situations, the first concerns the world of bacteria and the resource is a chemical species, the second concerns mammals and the resource is a plant, and in the final case the consumer and the resource are mammals, have in common the fact of consuming.

Following publication of the First Series of Fenichel's Collected Papers, covering the period 1922-1936, the present volume includes the writings which appeared from 1936 to the author's death in 1946. Taken together, those two volumes present all of Otto Fenichel's more significant contributions to psychoanalysis. In these later papers is revealed anew the breadth of view, the lively perception, and the variety of interests that marked his earlier work.

Otto Fenichel's highly significant essays explore many subjects that were only touched on in his books. Many of these discussions, present-day classics in their fields, are comprehensive monographs in themselves. Often so much is brought to bear on the central topic from so many sources, and then related so clearly to the context, that these essays become works of reference for a much larger field. It is a contribution of the greatest value to preserve and make conveniently available so much that is intensely useful from the life work of this remarkable man.

Late in July 2011, I had an unexpected call from Arnold D. Richards, an old acquaintance. He asked if I happened to have any unpublished papers on psychoanalysis; if so, he offered to make them available to their most likely audience through International Psychoanalysis. It happened that, for about a year, I had been trying to find a publisher for a collection of letters between David Rapaport and me during his final 12 years (1948–1960).
