Studies on modern drug delivery formulations of potential anti-cancer herbal products: Formulations were developed containing drug which bypasses pass metabolism. Lozenges comprising of curcumin and green tea extract were formulated, also chewing gums of same drugs were formulated and then studies were carried out for its anti-cancer activity. Solubility of curcumin was the biggest concern which was overcome by opting for potassium salt of curcumin. These dosage forms were selected due to the hydrolysable nature of curcumin. Buccal region was opted as it bypasses first pass metabolism. Before opting for salt form of curcumin, the drug was subjected to pre-formulation studies, its solid dispersions and prodrug approach didn't give expected results so after trying all options sodium salt of curcumin was decided but it had a problem in buccal pH so potassium salt was tried. Potassium salt of curcumin resulted into 15% more active on colon cancer cell line as compare to that of plain curcumin. Green tea extract doesn't pose any problem as it is easily soluble in water. In-vivo studies were done by using USP type II dissolution apparatus.
