Induction motors are the workhorse for the industry. Speed sensorless control in an induction motor drive offers many advantages like additional mechanical robustness, improved electrical signal noise immunity, minimum space utilisation, shaft availability on both sides of the motor for loading along with cost reduction. This book has reported two new classes of Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC) based speed sensorless drives that work in all operating regions with minimum parameter sensitivity especially at low speeds. Further, it has also proposed second order sliding mode controllers to make the drive robust to parameter variations. The induction machine vector control algorithm along with the proposed estimation and control schemes is simulated using Matlab/Simulink and the results are reported. Also, the propositions are experimentally verified using an FPGA based low cost hardware setup developed in the laboratory. A detailed description of the low cost hardware setup developed in the laboratory is also provided along with the test results of the proposed algorithms.
