The rainfall-runoff model, TOPMODEL, is one of the simpler hydrological models that makes use of the type of digital terrain data now available. This volume summarizes experiences in applying the model in a variety of environments. The Lancaster workshop and symposium was an initiative to try and ensure that experience of applying the model was shared as widely as possible. Uncertainty in the predictions of science when applied to the environment is an issue of great current relevance in relation to the impacts of climate change, protecting against natural and man-made disasters, pollutant transport and sustainable resource management. Hydrology in Practice is an excellent and very successful introductory text for engineering hydrology students who go on to be practitioners in consultancies, the Environment Agency and elsewhere. It has never been superseded by any other text in this respect.
