Madison Weatherbee-The Different Dachshund, is a children's chapter book about a courageous dachshund puppy suddenly forced into an uncertain future. "I was born someplace out in the Midwest; Missouri is what I overheard them say...." And so begins the saga of this irrepressible little dachshund. Innocent of the fate awaiting her, Madison happily lived with her momma and siblings on Granny Muriel's, the breeder's, farm. Soon people came, looked over the litter and made selections. Madison saw her brothers and sisters chosen over her. Why? The people sought the "perfect" dachshund by AKC standards. Madison was different; she was born with a ridge of fur standing up and running from the crown of her head down to the base of her neck. The shallow people never saw beyond her imperfection to the sweet nature of this pup. Soon the day came when Granny Muriel scooped Madison up, placed her into a dark carry case, shut then locked the door and sent the pup far away meant for a pet store on Long Island. While on the airplane flight from Missouri to John F. Kennedy Airport, this resourceful pup manages to unlock her carry case, sneak off the plane and dash into the airport causing havoc until she scoots onto a shuttle that lands her in the middle of NYC. Now she must survive in the midst of unforeseen dangers, conniving creatures and untrustworthy humans. Madison's story conveys the universal themes- "Even if you are not perfect, you still deserve acceptance and love." and "What might appear to be an imperfection, might really be a gift offering important lessons to learn." The lyric from Kelly Clarkson's song "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" equally applies to this valiant dachshund as she forges on through perilous obstacles that threaten her dearest desire, a forever family to call her own.
