SYNOPSIS
doctor ken: a true story about a man and the Hippocratic Oath
Physician Kehnroth Schramm and the woman who tried to protect him are the centre of this heartwarming and heartbreaking story of timeless love. The story examines medical ethics, legal ethics, social issues and honesty vs. dishonesty of people in powerful places.
The story opens at the University of Vermont Medical School with Ken and his graduating medical class of 1958 taking the Hippocratic Oath to do no harm and to keep his patients' secrets.
Daisy, the writer, then takes the reader from Ken's extraordinary birth in chapter 'In the Beginning', through his years at Dartmouth College and medical school, into years of advanced medical training in Paediatrics and Psychiatry, jobs, a registered objector of the Vietnam War resulting in migration to Canada, in and out of two marriages and fathering three boys.
Ken and Daisy's lives crisscross for twelve years as friends and neighbors, and through marriages to others. After twelve years, they are both single at the same time and find each other. The story is a mix of how Ken and Daisy work together in his psychiatric practice, midwifery, the turmoil of their private lives, and where they find peace.
Ken's second ex-wife, who became a lawyer while married to Ken, launches a hurricane of revenge to destroy Ken and Daisy. Ken's health breaks.
The war lasts a quarter of a century. An ex-wife and puppets in powerful places, including a Judge with a clear conflict of interest, and a provincial government demanding patient secrets, work to undermine Ken and Daisy.
Reading this book is to read a story on several levels, including the paranormal. There are themes of lies and corruption versus honesty and unwavering determination of Doctor Ken to live by the Hippocratic Oath and keep his promise of confidentiality to his patients.
Ken's heart breaks for a final time. After death, Ken purposely proves in several ways that life does continue and that he can communicate with Daisy. In a final chapter, there is a story about a Miracle Healing: a comatose patient in a Canadian hospital where Ken worked as a young doctor had been physically prepared for death by attending doctors. Summoned for the imminent death, parents are at the bedside when the man suddenly revives and immediately names Ken his spirit healer.
The little book Packets of Seeds: Messages from Kehnroth Schramm, M.D. describing Life after Passing, is included in the book. In his own words from the beyond, Ken describes his crossing over and continuing life, and gives us advice about what is important in living our lives.
