de Lara served in the guerrilla resistance to the Japanese during World War II. After the war, he was kidnapped for ransom, charged with murder of his town's mayor, and burdened with the death of his fiancee, all before making his way to America. He earned his Masters degree in engineering from Stanford, became a professional engineer, and for forty years oversay projects around the globe for Bechtel and The Ralph M. Parsons Company. He became an American citizen over four decades ago. He is now retired.
