Patrick John Rose was born on board his father's ship, the Marguerite, off the coast of New York on January 29, 1872. Patrick claimed to have sailed for more than 30 years and actually did sail to Cocos Island. Following his return to San Francisco, he gave up sailing as he had caught Alaskan gold fever.
