Patrick John Rose was born on board his father's ship, the Marguerite, off the coast of New York on January 29, 1872. His stories relate that his father's name was (Captain) John Wesley Rose of Dublin, Ireland. Patrick claimed to have sailed for more than 30 years and was an active participant with the Grimsby fishermen of England in the Dogger Banks of the North Sea and whaling in the Bering Sea. Patrick professed to be a "sailor, prospector, miner, cowpoke, and oil worker."
