Don Westerfield was born in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. A Korean War veteran, he spent forty-one years with the Indiana Air National Guard in Terre Haute as both a Civil Servant and a member of the Military Reserve, His interest in flying led him to attain both Pilot and Mechanic licenses from the FAA. Don attended Indiana State University where he graduated Magna cum Laude in 1979 with a degree in Vocational Education. He retired in 1991 as the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the State Adjutant General. After retirement, he taught Aviation History at his Alma Mater before moving full time to Florida in
