William Weaver is considered the preeminent living English language translator of Italian literature. Perhaps best known as the translator of Umberto Eco and Italo Calvino, he has also translated several other highly-regarded authors, including Italo Svevo and Prima Levi. Weaver met Elsa Morante and Alberto Moravia when he was serving in Italy in the Second World War, and he later translated several of their works. He was awarded the National Book Award for Translation in 1969, and he is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
