Luther Watson was born in Iowa; later his family moved to upstate New York and then to Southern California, where he finished high school and joined the Navy Hospital Corps. After serving in Vietnam, he finished his enlistment in Barstow, California, in the Mojave Desert. Many off-duty hours were spent exploring deep in the mines in the close-by Calico ghost town.
