About the Author: CELINA ECHOLS proudly describes herself as a Mississippi Freedom Summer Child. The second born of four children to educators and farmers in Columbia, Mississippi, Echols has a passion for social justice, educational psychology, and multicultural education. Echols' professional interest has led her from refugee camps in Nicaragua in the early 1980s to labor organizing in public schools around the United States.
