Von der Porten was born in Hamburg, Germany. In 1933 he migrated to Jamaica. He had a difficulty life because of pervasive poverty. He became a very good refrigerator mechanic, and took over the commercial refrigeration for the Jamaica Public Service Co. He also was a Jr. Swimming Champion of Jamaica. In 1953 he migrated to the U.S. and worked as a glassblower, industrial foreman, production manager, and a mechanical designer.
