Born in Venezuela, Argenis Vegas immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 21. He graduated from Northeastern Illinois University. He worked at City Colleges of Chicago, Jewish Vocational Services, and Horizons Community Services (now known as Center on Halsted). During his years in social services, Vegas served as a member of the Chicago Area HIV Service Planning Council and volunteered with The Salvation Army, AIDS Alternative Health Project, Test Positive Aware Network, National Catholic AIDS Network, and AIDS Pastoral Care Network.
