Isabel was born in South Dakota and has some Indian ancestors. A studious scholar, write and artist, she married a college schoolmate, a nuclear engineer. They planned to have a large family, so when he graduated with his MS in Physics, they already had three little children. Taking a position as a Reactor Engineer with the Savannah River Plant in Aiken, SC. they raised six children.
