John Coulson Tregarthen was a fifted field naturalist and writer, his books exhibiting an unrivalled knowledge of the Land's End. Born in Penzance and described as 'the man who enshrined the spirit of his county', he was President of the Royal Institution of Cornwall, a Fellow of the Zoological Society, a JP, and a bard of the Cornish Gorsedh. He is buried at St Columb Major.
