John Shipley Tilley was born in Conyers, Georgia in 1880. He earned his M.A. at Harvard and went on to become a successful attorney in Alabama. The grandson of a Confederate veteran, Tilley was a strong defender of the Southern cause, authoring two other books on the subject of the War Between the States: Lincoln Takes Command, which examines the historical details behind the Fort Sumter affair, and The Coming of the Glory, a study of the history of slavery in the United States, State sovereignty and the right of secession, and the events of the War and Reconstruction.
