Norman J. W. Thrower is Professor of Geography at the University of California, Los Angeles, founder of the UCLA Center for Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-Century Studies, and former director of the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library at UCLA. He is the editor of "The Three Voyages of Edmond Halley in the 'Paramore', 1698-1701" (1981) and "Sir Francis Drake and the Famous Voyage, 1577-1580" (University of California Press, 1984) and the coeditor of "A Buccaneer's Atlas: Basil Ringrose's South Sea Waggoner"
