Thomson graduated from Paris High School in 1935, from Paris Junior College in 1937 and from Texas A&M in 1940 with a BS in mechanical engineering. He attended Purdue University from June 1961 to October 1962 studying electronic engineering. Throughout his working career he was employed as an engineer by the Curtiss Propeller Division of Curtiss Wright, Link Belt, the Allison Division of General Motors, Rocketdyne and the Naval Air Systems Command in Washington, D.C., where he retired in 1995. He holds two US patents.
