Richard Tennent studied creative writing and literature at the University of Michigan before joining the Navy. Volunteering for duty on a destroyer operating in the Korean combat zone, he soon rose to the positions of Officer of the Deck-Underway and Engineer Officer. Leaving Korea he served in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. After the navy he attended Vanderbilt University School of Law, going on to practice banking and business law for forty-two years.
