Some of JoAnn Takasaki's favorite memories have to do with food. Her grandmother (her father's mother) owned an okazu-ya (Japanese-style deli) near Waikiki. She taught both of JoAnn's parents to cook. That's where her mother Susanna, a city girl from Brooklyn, first learned to cook. Adding to JoAnn's culinary education was her father's job with the government. He served in many countries, and each time he moved, his family went with him. As they traveled the world, they discovered new local foods that Susanna made her own and incorporated into their diets, quickly making them family favorites....
