John P. ("Jack") Sutton was born in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1934. He had a scholarship to the University of Virginia, where he majored in chemistry, graduating in 1956. He was hired as a patent examiner in the Patent Office, and attended night law school at George Washington University. In 1962, he was hired as the first law clerk for Judge J. Lindsay Almond, Jr. of the Court of Customs and Patent Appeals (CCPA).
