Like many children, Norman Styers learned chess from his father at an early age. He was in high school when Bobby Fischer played Boris Spassky for the world chess championship, and was part of the huge upsurge of interest in the game at that time. College years led to opportunities to begin tournament play and to learn more of the history and theory of chess.
