Ken McCormack, born in Louisiana, grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He attended the University of New Mexico, B.A., M.A. and University of California at Berkeley as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow. He worked as a teacher of English and taught courses in composition and the literature of nonviolence. He also has worked as a journalist.
