Raised in a suburb of San Francisco, the author went to the University of California at Davis obtaining a bachelor's degree in both mathematics and psychology followed by graduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology psychology department specializing in psycholinguistics.

An opportunity to teach mathematics at Georgetown Day School presented itself and within a couple of months she was appointed the chair of the math department.
