Gerald Spindel has been scribbling verse since he was eight, in 1933. He was born and raised in New York City, graduating from De Witt Clinton High School in 1942. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1943-46, as an aerial gunnery instructor. After the war, he enlisted as a student at NYU and Columbia University, but dropped out of both. He tried his hand at script writing, accumulating a small pile of rejection slips. In 1962, he packed up his wife and two young sons and drove west until he hit the Pacific.
