Smith was raised on a cattle ranch in Montana, was a professional bronc rider for 15 years, and has been nominated to the National Cowgirl's Hall of Fame. She performed in western movies as an extra and stunt double, served as a staff sergeant in the Womens' Army Corps, dealt blackjack in Reno, taught creative writing at two junior colleges in Phoenix, published several textbooks in Spanish and is a member of the mystery writers' organization "Sisters in Crime". Before retiring to Tempe, Arizona, she worked 10 years as a medical transcriber.
