Fred Lee Smith was born in Charleston, S.C., in 1954 and is not afraid to admit he has lived in the Lowcountry his entire life. He claims to have attended Charleston Southern University long enough for there to be records of some kind. Finding himself a dropout with nowhere to turn (except to his parents, whom he lived with and stole gas from), Smith consulted a Quija board, which led him to "The News and Courier" newspaper in 1974.
