Amy Smart loved to play with her mom's sewing machine when she was small and first learned to quilt as a girl, but she didn't begin quilting in earnest until after her first baby arrived in 1999, when she needed an artistic outlet and yearned to accomplish something that stayed done.

She worked Saturdays in a local quilt shop for seven years. She taught beginning quilting classes and found that she loved watching other people fall in love with collecting fabric, cutting it up, and sewing it back together.
