A majority of poems in "Ribbons" related to food or social customs are drawn from personal memories of the South. (Contrails, Heaven; Debutante Tea, Supper, and Gospel Choir.) Ms. Shelton grew up in Huntsville, Alabama, and graduated from Judson College for women, a private Bible-belt institution in Marion, Alabama where she was Editor of the Triangle. Later she acquired an M.S. in Instructional Materials Development at Northern Illinois University and worked at the Boeing Company in Seattle, Washington for 13 years.
