Sewell attended grade school in Huron, South Dakota, secondary school at St. John's Military Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin, and college at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts where he was awarded a SB in Electrical Engineering in 1943. He joined the Officer Candidate Program and became an airborne-radar specialist with the Eighth Air Force in WW II. Following three years of service he resumed his education at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and received a Masters Degree in Physics in 1947.
