Nohemi is one of twelve children from a third generation Colombian family. She was born on the remote mountain plantation her father named El Tyrol, which he hacked out of the jungle. After the murder of her father, killed because he was only trying to vote, her mother and children moved to Ibague, then to Bogota, capital of Colombia. Nohemi received her early education in Colombia and later struggled for more after she took her children to the United States after they were abandoned by their father's family.
