Monica Fernandez was born in Guatemala. The youngest of 6 children. Her parents died from long cancer when she was 10 years old. She lived in 17 different houses. Rebellious, at age 16 she became a smoker herself up to 2 packs a day!!! She started to swim at age 22 to help her lungs. Ended up quitting and doing triathlons, found her passion in the sport. After many sprint and olympic size triathlons, she decided to try for an Ironman. She became the first Guatemalan woman to participate and finish an Ironman in Hawaii.
