Mike Sands was born and raised in Scarborough, Ontario. He moved to BC in 1985 at the age of 23 and joined the army. Soon after, he moved to Maple Ridge, BC, and met the love of his life, Nadine. Mike and Nadine got married and five years later had their third child to complete their family. During those years, Mike went back to school to become a nurse. He was working two jobs as a registered nurse, specializing in Psychiatric Nursing, when in 2011 he was diagnosed with ALS.
