Rogers entered the University of Georgia after service in the U.S. Army during World War II. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Geology. After graduation, he began employment with J.M. Huber, a natural-resources corporation. Within five years the corporation appointed him Head of the Geologic Land Acquisition and Drilling Department. He served in this capacity for 20 years.
