Tony was born in Manchester, England, the great-grandson of an Italian immigrant from Genoa whose own son (Tony's grandfather) was closely identified with Manchester United for over forty years. In 1902 he actually gave the football club its name. At the age of seventeen he began a long journalistic career by joining a local paper in Stockport, Greater Manchester, and has been writing for a living almost ever since.
