A "baby boomer," John G. Roberts grew up in the small town of Covina in Southern California. After dropping out of college in 1968, Roberts was drafted. Trained as a combat infantryman, Roberts spent his time in Vietnam with the famous 101st Airborne Division. After completing his military obligation, he became a deputy sheriff and detective for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, the largest county in the 48 states.
